Steel is strong, but in the UAE it has a constant enemy: corrosion. Coastal humidity, airborne salt, high temperatures, and abrasive sand all attack unprotected steel. Choosing the right protection at the start is much cheaper than repairing rust later. Here is how the main options compare.
Why the UAE is hard on steel
Corrosion needs moisture and oxygen, and salt speeds it up. Dubai’s coastline brings high humidity, overnight condensation, and chloride-laden air. Under the international standard ISO 12944, coastal and industrial environments like this are commonly rated as high corrosivity categories (C4 or C5), compared with C2 or C3 for drier inland areas. Indoor, air-conditioned spaces are much milder. Your consultant usually specifies the category, and the coating follows from it.
Option 1: Paint systems
A typical industrial paint system has three layers:
- Primer, often zinc-rich epoxy, applied to blast-cleaned steel
- Intermediate coat, usually epoxy, to build thickness and barrier protection
- Top coat, often polyurethane, for UV resistance and colour
Pros: any colour, can be applied to any size of member, repairs are straightforward, good for architectural finishes.
Cons: performance depends heavily on surface preparation and film thickness, and damage during handling must be touched up. Paint will need maintenance over the building’s life.
Option 2: Hot-dip galvanizing
Hot-dip galvanizing dips the fabricated steel in molten zinc. The zinc bonds metallurgically with the steel, coating every surface inside and out, including hollow sections. The relevant standards are ISO 1461 and ASTM A123.
Pros: very durable, protects edges and corners, zinc protects small scratches sacrificially, little maintenance for many years, and the coating is applied in a controlled plant.
Cons: member size is limited by the galvanizing bath, the finish is grey (unless painted), and the process heat can distort thin or asymmetric pieces. Welding galvanized steel on site needs repair of the coating.
Option 3: Duplex systems
A duplex system is galvanizing plus paint. The two protect each other: paint shields the zinc, and zinc stops rust creeping under damaged paint. Duplex systems are often specified for exposed coastal structures, canopies, and anything that needs a colour and long life outdoors.
Quick comparison
| Paint system | Galvanizing | Duplex | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Colour | Any | Grey | Any |
| Outdoor durability | Good with maintenance | Very good | Excellent |
| Edge and corner protection | Weaker | Strong | Strong |
| Upfront cost | Lower | Medium | Highest |
| Maintenance | Periodic repainting | Low | Low |
What we recommend, by application
- Indoor structural steel and mezzanines in air-conditioned spaces: primer plus paint is usually enough.
- Warehouse frames in non-air-conditioned sheds: a good multi-coat paint system, or galvanizing for secondary steel.
- External staircases, handrails, gratings, and walkways: galvanizing, or duplex where colour matters.
- Canopies and outdoor equipment structures: duplex for the best life.
- Coastal sites: galvanizing or duplex as a minimum.
Details that matter as much as the coating
- Avoid water traps: drain holes in hollow sections, no pockets where water sits.
- Seal-weld or detail joints so moisture cannot get in.
- Specify how site welds and bolt heads will be protected.
- Handle coated steel with soft slings and touch up damage before handover.
Ask the fabricator early
Coating choice affects how steel is detailed. Galvanized members need vent holes and a size that fits the bath, while painted members need access for blasting. Decide it before shop drawings. DPSC can advise and quote for each option. See our structural steel fabrication service or ask for a quote.
