Fabrication and erection: how steel goes up safely on a Dubai site

Fabrication gets most of the attention, but erection is where a steel project succeeds or fails. Members that fit perfectly in the workshop still have to be lifted, placed, connected, and aligned on a busy site, often at height and in 40°C heat. This article walks through how a professional fabrication and erection company does it.

Before steel arrives on site

Method statement and risk assessment

Every erection starts on paper. The method statement describes the sequence, equipment, and crew. The risk assessment identifies hazards, such as falls, dropped objects, crane failure, and heat stress, and the controls for each.

Lifting plan

For crane lifts, a lifting plan sets the crane size and position, the heaviest lift and its radius, rigging gear, ground conditions, and exclusion zones. Critical lifts get extra review.

Checking the foundations

Before the first column goes up, the erection team surveys anchor bolts and base levels. A misplaced bolt is far easier to fix now than after the steel arrives.

Delivery sequence

Steel should arrive in the order it will be erected, so it can be lifted straight from the truck or a small laydown area. When the same company fabricates and erects, this is easy to arrange.

The erection sequence

  1. Columns: lifted, placed on the anchor bolts, and temporarily guyed or braced.
  2. First stable bay: beams and bracing form a stiff, braced bay that the rest of the frame is built from.
  3. Bay by bay: beams or rafters connect the frame, with bracing added as it goes.
  4. Bolting: connections are bolted up, then tightened to the specified torque or method once the frame is aligned.
  5. Plumbing and lining: the frame is checked for verticality and alignment, then the base plates are grouted.
  6. Secondary steel: purlins, girts, decking, stairs, and handrails follow.
  7. Touch-up: coating damage from handling and site welds is repaired.

Site safety essentials

  • Working at height: full-body harnesses, anchor points, edge protection, and mobile platforms (MEWPs) instead of ladders where possible
  • Lifting: certified cranes and rigging, a trained rigger and signaller, and no one under suspended loads
  • Hot work: permits, fire watch, and extinguishers for site welding and cutting
  • Heat: water, shade, rest breaks, and adjusted hours in summer, in line with the UAE’s midday break rules for outdoor work
  • Toolbox talks: short daily briefings on the day’s hazards
  • Incident reporting: every incident and near miss reported, investigated, and acted on

Quality checks during erection

  • Frame alignment and verticality within tolerance
  • Bolt tightening and site weld inspection
  • Coating repairs
  • Records handed over to the main contractor and consultant

Why one company for fabrication and erection

When fabrication and erection are split, every misfit becomes a dispute. When one company does both, the team that detailed a connection is the team that bolts it, and site feedback goes straight back to the workshop. That is faster, safer, and cheaper.

DPSC is a fabrication and erection company in Dubai, with our own riggers, erectors, supervisors, and safety in charge. See examples like our steel structure at a Sobha Realty site and mezzanine erection in Abu Dhabi.
