It protects people, vehicles, goods, and equipment from the sun, and it shapes the first impression of a building. Steel is the natural material for canopies: strong, slim, and quick to install. Types of steel canopy
Entrance canopies
Over villa doors, office lobbies, hotels, and showrooms. Often cantilevered from the building for a clean look, or supported on slender columns. Glass, metal, or composite panel roofs are common.
Car park shades
Single or double cantilever structures over parking bays, roofed with metal sheet, tensile fabric, or polycarbonate. They keep cars cool and can carry solar panels.
Loading bay canopies
For warehouses, so trucks load in the shade and goods stay dry during the occasional downpour. Usually attached to the warehouse frame or standing free on columns.
Walkway canopies
Covered walkways linking buildings, gates, and car parks, which are important in schools, hospitals, and offices.
Pergolas and outdoor structures
Steel pergolas for terraces and gardens, with louvres, slats, or fabric.
Equipment shades

Design: wind is the governing load
A canopy is light, but it acts like a sail. Wind pushes it down and, more dangerously, sucks it up. Cantilevered canopies put large bending forces into their fixings. That is why every canopy should be designed by an engineer, with:
- Members sized for wind uplift and downforce
- Fixings checked against the strength of the supporting wall or slab
- Foundations for free-standing columns
- Drainage, so water does not pond and overload the roof
